Cap Puckhaber: Idaho

Sawtooth Wilderness Loop

The Sawtooth Wilderness Loop in Idaho is a breathtaking, rugged trail that offers some of the best hiking in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. This loop, roughly 25 miles long, takes you deep into the heart of the Sawtooth Mountains, a region known for its jagged peaks, pristine lakes, and alpine meadows. It’s a challenging, multi-day hike that attracts experienced adventurers looking for a truly remote and immersive wilderness experience.

Details

The trail offers diverse landscapes, from dense forests to open ridgelines, where hikers are treated to stunning panoramic views of towering granite peaks and crystal-clear lakes. Notable highlights along the route include the pristine Redfish Lake and several smaller, hidden lakes like Alice and Toxaway Lakes, ideal spots for resting or taking a swim. The area is rich in wildlife, including elk, mountain goats, and a variety of bird species.

Recommendations

Due to the challenging terrain and high elevations, the Sawtooth Wilderness Loop is best suited for seasoned hikers prepared for steep climbs and rugged conditions. However, the rewards are immense: remote backcountry, incredible vistas, and a true sense of solitude. Whether you're seeking adventure, solitude, or just the chance to experience one of Idaho's most iconic wilderness areas, this loop offers an unforgettable journey.
